AirNet Communications Receives Follow-On Order to Support
Telsom Mobile Expansion Program

Melbourne, FL, August 20, 2001 - AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC), the technology leader in base station products for wireless communications, has been awarded a follow-on order by Telsom Mobile for additional base station equipment. The order for additional GSM Base Stations is the second phase of a multi-million dollar contract announced in May 2000.

Under terms of the agreement, AirNet provided a complete GSM Base Station Subsystem for Telsom Mobile in Somalia including base stations, common equipment, and ancillary equipment. Some cell sites were fitted with AirNet’s AdaptaCell™ broadband, software-defined base transceiver station while other sites were configured with the AirSite® Backhaul Free™ base station, designed to eliminate the need for expensive T1/E1 services in lower density regions.

“Telsom Mobile understands that it takes a special kind of wireless infrastructure to obtain low cost coverage solutions which help to significantly reduce operating costs,” noted Glenn Ehley, president and CEO for AirNet. “Only AirNet offers an infrastructure solution that allows operators to deploy new, low cost, coverage solutions today while maintaining a software upgrade path to wireless Internet.”

“We extensively evaluated various technologies and vendors during our initial selection process,” said Mr. Sharif Ahmed Sheikh M. Baalwi, Director of Musalim Trading, Dubai and Chairman of Telsom Mobile. “We chose the AirNet system which includes the AirSite Backhaul Free base station and will allow us to achieve positive cash flow considerably earlier than alternative options. AirNet was able to offer us a cost-effective, rapidly deployable network that meets our current needs and will support our next expansion phase scheduled for later this year.”

AirNet’s backhaul free base station was the key to success with Telsom Mobile. The AirSite Backhaul Free base station provides much faster payback because it eliminates the need for E1 lease costs or installation of new microwave equipment. In addition, the AirNet high power base station is small and lightweight, which reduces installation costs and reduces BTS site requirements.
