CTIA Wireless 2001, Las Vegas, NV/Melbourne, FL, March 19, 2001 - AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC), the technology leader in base stations for wireless communications, today unveiled the next generation of its proven AirSite® Backhaul Free base station at CTIA Wireless 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new AirSite base station fully supports high-speed data services - such as GPRS - in a compact, lightweight housing that allows for rapid, cost-effective deployment.
Building on AirNet’s award-winning, proprietary base station technology, the AirSite base station offers an economical, backhaul-free solution for coverage-limited applications, such as smaller cities, or suburban and highway areas. The AirSite uses fewer T1/E1 links - resulting in up to a 12-fold savings on T1/E1 costs. In addition, the AirSite base station supports optional tower-mounted amplifiers for improved receive sensitivity, and features omni-directional and sectored antenna configurations.
“Whether an operator needs coverage or capacity, AirNet has the most cost-effective base station solution. The AdaptaCell broadband, software-defined base station offers the highest capacity solution available today with twice the capacity and twice the data rate of traditional base stations and the AirSite backhaul-free base station is the most cost-effective coverage solution available today,” said Lee Hamilton, president and CEO of AirNet Communications. “The next-generation AirSite also increases capacity by allowing operators to deploy up to twice as many AirSite base stations as before.”
The AirSite base station allows users to quickly upgrade from one to two RF carriers. It also supports remote configuration and monitoring capabilities, is field serviceable, and offers a battery backup option. The AirSite base station also provides full base station functionality including E911 requirements for cell location.
“The new AirSite BTS is the only product of its kind on the market,” said Glenn Ehley, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at AirNet. “It offers macro cellular coverage at a micro cellular price and provides operators a path to high speed data. We continue to see strong interest from operators who want to take advantage of our unique backhaul-free solution.”
