AirNet Communications Announces EDGE Upgrade to AdaptaCell™ Base Station; Two Large Operators to Trial EDGE on AirNet® Platform

CTIA Wireless 2001, Las Vegas, NV/Melbourne, FL, March 19, 2001 - AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC), the technology leader in base station products for wireless communications, today announced the availability of EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) software for its broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell™ base station. EDGE delivers third-generation (3G) data rates up to 470 Kbps, enabling operators to provide high-speed wireless data services without purchasing additional spectrum.

The new EDGE product announced today, along with AirNet’s previously announced GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) product, clearly demonstrate the software upgrade flexibility of AirNet’s AdaptaCell base station. AirNet announced last month that it had received customer acceptance from MBO Wireless in Oklahoma for one of the first GPRS solutions deployed in the U.S.

AirNet’s EDGE product - planned for the second half of 2001 - will allow wireless operators to easily migrate from GSM or GPRS to EDGE by installing the EDGE product on AirNet’s base stations. No new base stations are required. AirNet will support all EDGE coding schemes up to MCS9, the highest EDGE data rate. As previously announced, AirNet will also offer an integrated Super Capacity™ Adaptive Array solution that will allow operators to achieve twice the capacity and twice the data rate of traditional base stations.

The company also announced that it has signed two agreements to demonstrate EDGE in the second half of 2001 - one with a large operator in the U.S. and the other with a large operator in Asia. The field trials will focus on AirNet’s GSM, GPRS, EDGE and Super Capacity Adaptive Array solutions.

“Customer reaction to these products has been extremely positive,” said Lee Hamilton, president and CEO of AirNet Communications. “Many operators see EDGE as the perfect 3G solution. It offers data rates comparable to other 3G alternatives and can be deployed using an operator’s existing frequencies as opposed to buying expensive 3G spectrum. AirNet’s AdaptaCell base station gives operators the flexibility to upgrade to GPRS or EDGE when and where they need to without deploying additional base stations, while our Super Capacity Adaptive Array solution provides twice the capacity and twice the data rate using the same cell sites and frequencies.”

“The ability to seamlessly migrate to EDGE provides operators the power to quickly offer higher-speed wireless data services to their customers,” said Glenn Ehley, AirNet's senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. “By deploying AirNet’s EDGE solution, operators can achieve improved capacity and spectrum efficiency, enabling enhanced delivery of existing services and 3G applications.”
