AirNet Is Awarded PCS Equipment Contract From D/F Block Winner
Panhandle Telecommunication Systems Inc.

Melbourne, FL – AirNet Communications Corporation announced today that it has signed a turnkey contract to supply GSM-based PCS (Personal Communications Services) wireless infrastructure equipment and services to Panhandle Telecommunication Systems, Inc. (PTSI), an independent telecommunications company who successfully bid in the FCC’s PCS D/E/F-block auction.

PTSI has obtained two licenses to provide PCS service in the Liberal, KS Basic Trading Area (BTA). This BTA consists of six counties, namely: Meade, Morton, Seward, Stevens, Beaver and Texas. The system deployment will start in the second quarter of 1998 and continue into August 1998.

"We conducted thorough research into various air interface technologies and infrastructure vendors, but, given our population density and large coverage area, only AirNet could make our business plan work," stated Ron Strecker, president and chief executive officer of PTSI. "Additionally, we wanted to partner with a vendor that understands the unique circumstances faced by community and regional wireless providers. AirNet’s solution clearly provided the lowest channel cost per square mile of coverage. Soon Liberal, Kansas will have access to the same wireless communications quality, clarity and security as New York or Los Angeles."

PTSI has opted for the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology for its PCS 1900 network. GSM, the leading digital wireless standard in the world, has been chosen by over 250 service providers in 110 countries and is used by an estimated 60 million subscribers.

"It is essential that we have both focused and distributed capacity in our network. AirNet’s high capacity base station coupled with their AirSitetm Remote Radio was a perfect fit with our strategy to offer a superior value proposition for our subscribers," said Gary Burke, plant manager for PTSI.

Under the terms of the agreement, AirNet will supply and install a full turnkey GSM/PCS 1900 infrastructure system. PTSI’s network, initially designed for high mobility communications, is scalable in order to support "community cordless" services as well.

"We welcome Liberal, Kansas to AirNet’s growing list of community wireless networks," said Jerry Adams, president and chief executive officer of AirNet Communications Corp. "And we are very excited to have the opportunity of working with PTSI, one of the most innovative companies, in bringing to fruition advanced personal communications to the Heartland."

"AirNet’s GSM/PCS-1900 solution was designed so that community-based wireless operators could extend cost-effective digital services to all areas, especially rural communities and highway corridors," remarked Glenn Ehley, vice president of AirNet Communications Corp.

Panhandle Telecommunication Systems, Inc., (PTSI) offers deregulated telecommunications services, such as cellular, paging, Internet, DBS (DIRECTV), long distance and a 24 hour answering service, to the Oklahoma Panhandle, North Texas Panhandle and Southwest Kansas. PTSI is a subsidiary of Panhandle Telephone Cooperative, which, in it’s 42 year history, has grown from very humble beginnings to be one of the most progressive telephone companies of any size in the United States.

AirNet Communications Corporation, based in Melbourne, Florida, designs, manufactures, distributes and supports GSM-based (GSM 900, DCS-1800 and PCS-1900) wireless infrastructure solutions. AirNet offers a full spectrum of cost-effective systems designed to solve capacity and coverage issues faced by service providers operating in suburban and rural communities as well as along highway corridors. Winner of the 1998 GSM World Award for Best Technical Innovation.
