AirNet Inks Multimillion Dollar Contract With OnQue Communications

Melbourne, Florida - AirNet Communications Corporation today announced the signing of a multimillion dollar contract to supply GSM wireless infrastructure equipment to OnQue Communications Inc. The equipment is earmarked for deployment in the Fort Smith and Russellville, AR, Basic Trading Areas (BTAs) with more than 360,000 potential subscribers.

AirNet will provide a complete Base Station Subsystem (BSS), including broadband Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs), AirSite® Backhaul Free™ Base Stations, a Base Station Controller (BSC), Transcoder Rate Adapter Unit (TRAU), Operations and Maintenance Center for Radio (OMC-R), and ancillary equipment. OnQue is headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK.

"We were really impressed with the quality and cost efficiency of the AirNet system," said OnQue President Charles Curtis. "Not only is AirNet's advanced broadband technology a step closer to 3G than any other vendor's, but the cash savings OnQue will realize by using AirSite Backhaul Free Base Stations is truly remarkable.

"We had considered using other wireless technologies, but the fact that GSM has been standardized all over the world convinced us that it's the safest bet for right here in America's heartland," Curtis added.

"We are really pleased that OnQue chose AirNet as their partner in this build-out," remarked Dr. Lee Hamilton, AirNet president and CEO. "Service providers all over the world are beginning to recognize the tremendous operational cost savings offered by AirNet's BSS. Our compelling business case and 'future-proof' software-defined broadband technology make AirNet hard to beat in applications like this."

"The AirSite communicates with the rest of the network using the PCS spectrum the operator has already licensed," explained Glenn Ehley, AirNet vice president of sales and marketing. "That means the AirSite base station doesn't require a T1 line or fixed microwave facility for backhaul. Since backhaul can cost an operator anywhere from $500 to $1800 per base station per month, the savings can be enormous."

AirNet Communications Corporation, based in Melbourne, Florida, designs, manufactures, distributes, and supports profitable GSM-based (GSM-900, GSM-1800, and GSM-1900) wireless infrastructure solutions. AirNet's products include a line of software-defined, broadband BTSs and the AirSite Backhaul Free Base Station. AirNet was awarded the 1998 GSM World Award for Best Technical Innovation.
