AirNet Communications Inks Contract to Supply GSM-1900 Network
Infrastructure to Comtel PCS

Melbourne, Florida -- AirNet Communications Corporation announced today the signing of a multi-million dollar contract to supply GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) wireless infrastructure equipment and associated services to Comtel PCS Mainstreet LP. Comtel will initially provide GSM service to the Lawton-Duncan, OK, Basic Trading Area (BTA) with a population of more than 180,000 potential subscribers. Subsequently, Comtel will expand its coverage to include an additional 440,000 potential subscribers in the Sherman-Denison, TX, Wichita Falls, TX, and Ardmore, OK BTAs.

Comtel is a consortium composed of four independent telephone companies: Cherokee Telephone Company, Community Telephone Company, North Texas Communications, and Poka Lambro Telephone Cooperative. Poka Lambro PCS, Inc. will manage and operate the system for Comtel.

AirNet will supply a complete GSM Base Station Subsystem (BSS), including an operations and maintenance center, base station controller, transcoder rate adapter unit, and all associated cell sites. Some cell sites will be fitted with AirNet’s high-capacity software defined broadband base transceiver stations while the remaining sites will be configured with AirSite® Backhaul Free™ Base Stations.

Comtel undertook an exhaustive study of all competitive infrastructure alternatives and concluded that AirNet was the only infrastructure vendor that could economically provide the initial coverage required to compete with the region’s incumbent wireless carriers. A Comtel spokesperson noted, "We can forget the high cost associated with T1 lines. The savings in backhaul costs alone made a huge impact on our business plan."

"The market continues to show us that it takes a lot more than technology to serve the needs of rural and suburban service providers," said Dr. Lee Hamilton, AirNet president and CEO. "That's why providers all across the U.S. are choosing AirNet's GSM solution. As the 'GSM Economy Experts'; we can offer absolutely the best business case for wireless operators in this hyper-competitive environment."

"AirNet provides the most economical wireless infrastructure solution in the industry, bar none. The fact that we can expedite the profitability of our customers is especially pleasing," remarked Glenn Ehley AirNet's vice president of Sales and Marketing. "More and more service providers are signing up for our winning 'backhaul free' solution and reaping the benefits of GSM."

AirNet Communications Corporation, based in Melbourne, Florida, designs, manufactures, distributes, and supports profitable GSM-based (GSM 900, GSM-1800, and GSM-1900) wireless infrastructure solutions. AirNet's products include the AirSite Backhaul Free Base Station and software defined broadband BTS - winners of the 1998 GSM World Award for Best Technical Innovation.
