AirNet Introduces New Super Capacity Base Station For The Wireless Internet

CHICAGO--PCIA Global XChange 2000, McCormick South Hall A1-A2, Booth No.2918 - AirNet Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:ANCC) today introduced the industry's first super capacity base station that will dramatically increase wireless operators' capacity and performance - and speed the industry's move to the wireless Internet.

At the PCIA Global XChange 2000 Conference in Chicago, AirNet unveiled the new AdaptaCell™ super capacity base station, which is built on AirNet's current broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell base station platform. The new base station will be available in mid 2001 and will:

  • Provide the highest capacity - without having to deploy additional base stations;
  • Provide twice the data rate - without adding base stations;
  • Avoid decreases in cell coverage area; and
  • Utilize adaptive array technology economically.

The AdaptaCell super capacity base station represents a quantum leap in wireless communications technology," said Lee Hamilton, president and CEO of AirNet. "More importantly, it gives wireless operators the most cost-effective path for expanding network capacity and meeting the demand for new services, including the wireless Internet."

The base station will feature adaptive array technology, which leverages AirNet's existing broadband, software-defined base station. The technology dramatically increases the operators' spectral efficiency - resulting in tremendous increases in network performance -- by focusing radio signals on individual handset antennas instead of spreading them over the entire cell.

Incorporating the technology into AirNet's AdaptaCell base stations will provide a number of key benefits for operators trying to transition from current wireless standards to the new GPRS and EDGE standards.

One of the primary benefits is that AirNet's solution provides high-speed data over the entire existing cell area. Competitors' solutions only provide high-speed data in part of the existing cell, requiring operators to install up to five times as many base stations to cover the same area.

Also, the AdaptaCell adaptive array platform will improve the quality and quantity of the throughput of the network - maximizing the use of the operator's radio spectrum. This improved throughput enables the new super capacity base station to handle dramatically more traffic through any given cell. This capacity improvement will enable operators to significantly increase the number of users within their coverage area, and provide additional high-speed services, such as the wireless Internet, without adding new base stations or towers.

In addition, operators will be able to improve the quality of the voice and data communications on their networks. Traditional systems are prone to interference because they have to transmit signals over a wide area to locate the end user. This dispersed approach means most of the signal power is wasted. In contrast, adaptive array technology reduces interference, improves voice quality, and conserves signal power by focusing and receiving energy only in desired locations.

Finally, since the base stations are software-defined, the operators can expand or upgrade their systems to include these new capabilities easily - typically by switching the software, not changing out hardware, as with traditional systems.
