Melbourne, Florida -Ė As part of its strategy to expand its customer base to include larger operators, AirNet® Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC) has signed an agreement to conduct a field trial of its wireless base station systems with one of the major telecommunication operators in Asia. The operator, with over 500,000 subscribers and more than 1,000 employees, has an installed base of almost 2,000 base stations. It is a subsidiary of a leading provider of fixed line, cellular and Internet services in Asia and Africa, with revenues of over $2 Billion (US) and over 4 million subscribers. Their strategy includes a policy of investing substantially in upgrading and renewing its network to provide affordable multimedia services to home and business users.
AirNet will conduct a demonstration of its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) infrastructure equipment, including the AdaptaCell broadband, software-defined Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs), AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Stations, and associated common equipment.
"We are pleased to be working with one of the large, top-tier international operators," said Lee Hamilton, president and CEO of AirNet. "As we have anticipated, the larger operators are now taking notice of AirNetís cost-effective solution for expanding coverage and capacity. This is a great opportunity for AirNet to demonstrate and ultimately deploy our equipment in a region of the world where wireless services are rapidly growing."
The demonstration is scheduled to begin this fall and be completed in early 2001. Further information about the trial was not disclosed at the customerís request.
"This demonstration illustrates the strength of our wireless solution and the continued success of AirNet providing leading edge products to a growing number of operators worldwide," stated Glenn Ehley, senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing at AirNet. "The ability to upgrade their base stations as they evolve to high speed data services was an important factor in selecting AirNet. We look forward to successfully completing the demonstration and implementing the much larger network."
AirNet Communications Corporation provides wireless base stations and other telecommunications equipment designed to allow service operators to cost-effectively offer simultaneous wireless high-speed Internet and voice services to mobile subscribers. The Company's AdaptaCell incorporates a patented radio architecture that is designed to enable operators to offer these services by upgrading base station software rather than deploying new base station hardware. The Company's AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Station carries wireless voice and data signals back to the wireline network without a physical communications link - usually a digital T1 phone line. As a result, an operator's fixed network operating costs may decrease substantially.
AirNet Communications Corporationís award winning wireless base station products, based on over 60 patents either issued or filed, provide a cost effective, future proof solution for wireless operators as they deploy and expand their networks. AirNetís patented broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell base station provides a high capacity base station with a software upgrade path to the wireless Internet.
The AdaptaCellís patented technology means no more time consuming and expensive hardware upgrades Ė the wireless Internet is only a software upgrade away. And, with software control, AirNet lets service providers support multiple protocols simultaneously avoiding costly overlays.
The AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Stationís award winning architecture eliminates the need for a physical backhaul link, thus reducing operating costs. AirNet base station products won the prestigious GSM World Award for technical innovation for AdaptaCellís software upgrade to the wireless Internet and for AirSiteís revolutionary wireless backhaul capability.
