Melbourne, Florida - AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC) today announced an OEM distribution agreement with Marconi Communications SpA of Italy. Marconi also placed a purchase order for a demonstration system. Under the terms of this agreement, Marconi has the non-exclusive right to market and distribute AirNet's GSM products worldwide. These products include all of AirNet's Base Station Subsystem (BSS) products including the AdaptaCell broadband software-defined base station and the AirSite® Backhaul Free Base Station.
Marconi Communications SpA is part of Marconi plc, a leader in fixed and wireless communications for over 100 years. Marconi's revenue in 1999 was $9 billion (US). Marconi recently announced that it had agreed to acquire MSI, a global provider of services and software used by the wireless telecommunications industry. This highlights Marconi's strategy to increase its presence in the mobile, wireless Internet, and fixed wireless markets. Marconi, with more than 45,000 employees and sales in over 100 countries focusing specifically on the carrier market, is now poised to capitalize on its strengths in broadband landline, wireless infrastructure, network integration, and access networks.
"AirNet's GSM products will allow Marconi to address the rapidly growing market for wireless infrastructure," stated Aldo Olivari, chief executive officer of Marconi Mobile. "This is consistent with and complements Marconi's recent acquisition of MSI. AirNet provides an unparalleled advantage: the broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell base station provides a high capacity base station with a software upgrade path to the wireless Internet and the AirSite base station eliminates the need for a physical backhaul link, thus dramatically reducing operating costs."
Lee Hamilton, AirNet's president and chief executive officer commenting on the agreement said, "This agreement with Marconi expands AirNet's distribution reach with a long time leader in wireless technology. Marconi is committed to wireless as evidenced by their recent acquisition of MSI. Marconi's decision to market and distribute AirNet's products is further validation of AirNet's award winning wireless base station products."
AirNet Communications Corporation's award winning wireless base station products, based on over 60 patents either issued or filed, provide a cost effective, future proof solution for wireless operators as they deploy and expand their networks. AirNet's patented broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell base station provides a high capacity base station with a software upgrade path to the wireless Internet.
The AdaptaCell's patented technology means no more time consuming and expensive hardware upgrades - the wireless Internet is only a software upgrade away. And, with software control, AirNet lets service providers support multiple protocols simultaneously avoiding costly overlays. The AirSite's award winning architecture eliminates the need for a physical backhaul link, thus reducing operating costs. AirNet base station products won the prestigious "GSM World Award" for technical innovation for AdaptaCell's software upgrade to the wireless Internet and for AirSite's revolutionary wireless backhaul capability. AirNet is a wireless base station technology leader. AirNet can be contacted in the US at 321-984-1990 or visit us at www.airnetcom.com.
